The Amazing Race All Stars: Oh How The Mighty Have Fallen!

This was quite an exciting leg of The Amazing Race All Stars! At least, I was not prepared for the ending. As usual, teams left in the order they arrived. The clue they got told the teams to fly 500 miles to Punta Arenas, Chile. Once here, they would travel 15 miles by taxi to a shipwreck the teams referred to as Barco Viejo. They received $302 for this leg of the race.

All of the teams headed strait for the airport. Rob & Amber leaving first, got there first and were able to get tickets on a 9:40 flight. They then looked for an internet connection so that they could do some research on their destination. The other teams that manage to get on the 9:40 flight are Danny & Oswald, Eric & Danielle, Dustin & Kandace, Uchenna & Joyce and Teri & Ian. Teri & Ian barely made it on the flight. They really begged and pleaded with the ticket agent. The next available flight is at 11:15 carrying Joe & Bill and Charla & Mirna.

The early flight arrives and teams head out by taxi to find their next clue is a DETOUR. In this detour, they must choose between Navigate It and Sign It. In Navigate It, teams must use a provided map and find the town square where they will meet up with a sailor (no really) who will give them a compass. They must then use this compass and go due south until they find the Nautilus building, a deep-sea salvage business, and the owner will give them the next clue. In Sign It, teams must choose a pole and set of building supplies and carry them up a long set of stairs. Once at the top, they will see a map of Magellan’s Voyage. They must use this map as a reference and build a signpost with all of the destinations on it in the correct order. They do not have to have all of the signs pointing the correct direction, but they do have to spell the names of the destinations correctly.

Navigate It is chosen by Danny & Oswald, Eric & Danielle, Teri & Ian and Joe & Bill (once they finally arrive). Sign It is chosen by Rob & Amber, Dustin & Kandace, Uchenna & Joyce and Charla & Mirna. Lucky for Rob, he knows right off the bat that Magellan started in Seville. (the other teams looking at the map choose Guam) Unluckily for Rob, he does not know how to spell Philippines, and never catches that that is the mistake. The funny thing is after the first time they are turned down by the checker, he says “It better not be that spelling thing”. Well, maybe you should check it just in case – NAH!

It seems that the teams that chose Navigate it are fairing much better. Eric & Danielle are the first to arrive at the Nautilus Building with Oswald & Danny and Teri & Ian not far behind. Uchenna & Joyce are actually the only team that finishes the Sign It task. They figure out that Seville was the correct starting point AND they can spell Philippines. Rob & Amber and Dustin& Kandace spend more time trying to get it right and then eventually give up to try the other task. They waited a bit too long though, as they when they finally arrive at the town square, Team Guido arrives as well. In fact, they pass them up. Rob & Amber and Dustin & Kandace kind of team up to try to get through the rest of this task. As they are talking about which way to go and what to do, Joe & Bill get their compass and pass them right by. Rob thinks that he knows where they are supposed to go, and they all decide to follow him rather than use the compass provided. He leads them to the wrong building. Luckily for them, the person at the place they end up, tells them how to get to the Nautilus Building they should have gone to.

The clue the teams receive from the Nautilus proprietor sends them back to the airport to sign up for one of two charter flights leaving 3 hours apart to take them 165 miles to Ushuaia, Argentina, where they must make their way to Playa Larga to find the next clue. The teams that make it on the 1st plane are Danny & Oswald, Eric & Danielle and Teri & Ian. Everyone else is on flight number 2. To give you an idea of how much time Rob, Amber, Dustin and Kandace wasted on the sign task, all three of the teams on flight one saw Charla, Mirna, Joe and Bill arriving on the later flight after they signed up on the sheet.

The clue at Playa Larga is not easily seen. Lots of teams run off in the wrong direction, but manage to make their way back and find it. Rob & Amber out and out lie to Charla & Mirna telling them that they found the clue in a direction they had not. Luckily, Charla & Mirna didn’t believe them. This clue sends the teams by taxi to Bahia Lapatia where they must get a number to catch a boat leaving every 20 minutes that can carry only 2 teams at a time to Isla Redonda a.k.a. the end of the world. It is the southern most point of South America. They must get to their post office to find the next clue.

The post office clue is a ROAD BLOCK. One team member must search through a mailbag containing 1600 pieces of mail to find one of two letters addressed to their team. They then must read the letter aloud to their teammate in order to get the next clue. What they don’t know is that the letter they find was written by another team from their original TAR season. Half are warm and fuzzy and half are from their “enemies” in the previous season. Nice touch. I wonder if there all really had two sets of letters and it just so happened that half of the players found one and the other half the other.

The clue they find next sends them on foot to the next Pit Stop the Mastil Del Belgrano, and overlook situated on the southern tip. The teams arrived in the following order:
1. Oswald & Danny who won trips for 2 to Maui
2. Eric & Danielle
3. Teri & Ian
4. Joe & Bill
5. Dustin & Kandace
6. Uchenna & Joyce
7. Charla & Mirna
8. Rob & Amber

Oh, yes, how the mighty have fallen! See, there is that little thing called Karma that always comes back to bite you in the butt when you least expect it. Rob & Amber who came in first on the first three legs now have fallen to last place. Rob took a very long time to find the letter in the post office. Personally, I think they never should have sent him in as he was in such a bad mood to begin with. But, their loss is everyone else’s gain. It looks like next week we get to see some huge rats (anyone ever seen The Tick?)

I wonder if we would've had seen a letter from the Cho Bros. had Dave & Mary stuck around for another leg.

I never thought of that, but it would have been pretty cool.
