If you’ve found yourself jonesing for a “30 Rock” fix lately, stumbling through your day mumbling, “Rural juror, rural juror,” then here’s some welcome news, ranked in order of how excited it made me:
1. The show returns to NBC on April 5 as part of a three-hour supersized comedy block. While the concept of “supersized” strikes me as spurious, prompting me to wonder if there is any bonus material to the shows, or if they have merely been fattened with commercials and staggered to air at odd times simply to stymie those of us still without Tivo, I am still sufficiently thrilled to put this at the top of my “Great News / Good News” list. Even more intriguing is that the show is moving up to 9:00, the old time-slot stomping grounds of “Cheers,” which leads us to…
2. NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly recently compared the show to "Cheers." Consider the similarities: Smart, hilarious (slow-starting, ratings-challenged) sitcom, centered around a brainy, neurotic, single, big city career gal who struggles to earn the respect of her sarcastic co-workers while navigating a tenuous relationship with her charming, swinging bachelor boss. On the other hand, that also pretty much describes “Wings,” if you replace “hilarious” with “mildly funny.” Oh wait! And “The Mary Tyler Moore Show!!” Classic!
3. About that Golden Globe for Alec Baldwin: It’s about time! After five G.G. nominations, four Emmy acting nods, and one more for Oscar, I would say he was due to take home something besides a set of steak knives.
Janaki,
Thanks for the encouraging words. I'm excited to see where this show goes, and if it can eventually bust out. There's so much potential!
